Introduction to commercial knitwear development

Overview

Start at the beginning and be introduced to the commercial process of knitwear development. In this two day workshop, participants will be taken on a journey from design concept to production of a knitted sample complete with specification. You will be introduced to fibres, yarn production, knitted fabrics, specifications and a variety of knit machines.

Suited for

This workshop will appeal to those currently working in the textile and fashion industry either involved in knitwear production or wanting to develop an understanding of knitwear production. This workshop will also appeal to new businesses or individuals interested in knitwear. Participants may come from a design, retail, training or manufacturing background.

Preparation

All learning materials including a workbook and swatch kits will be provided along with a light lunch and refreshments.

Presenter

Paul Montgomery has over 25 years' experience working with knitwear and knitwear machines. He began his training as a textile technician in New Zealand and over the years undertook further training in Germany with Stoll and Japan with Shima. His major activities have included research and development, sampling and product development with a range of local and international companies and he is considered one of Australia's leading knitwear product developers.

    • Yarn processing for natural and manmade
    • Specific focus on wool yarns, worsted and woollen systems and speciality yarns
  • Fabric
    • Understanding machine gauges
    • Basic knit structures are analysed
    • Benefits and characteristics of knit structures
    • Perform a fabric analysis
  • Specifications
    • Importance of specifications as a communication tool
    • Examples of specifications
    • Create a specification

Day 2

  • Introduction to the Knit Machine - what can it do?
    • Basics of how it works - components and characteristics
  • Basics of how it works - components and characteristics
    • An overview of knit design software
    • Design tools
    • Knitwear development
  • Research
    • Access our online textile and fashion resource library
  • Design your own scarf
    • In small teams you will workshop and create a specification for a scarf to be knitted
    • Work with a technician to program the scarf style and watch the knit down
