Frequently asked questions (TAFE courses)

What is TAFE?

TAFE stands for Technical and Further Education. It is a national system of vocational educational and training at a post-secondary level. TAFE institutes are the largest providers of post-secondary education in Australia.

Can TAFE qualifications become part of other courses/degrees?

If you have already completed all or part of a nationally recognised course at another TAFE institute (or other Registered Training Organisation) and have a certificate or statement of attainment which includes the Nationally Recognised Training logo, then Kangan Institute will recognise this previous study.

You may also be eligible for credits or exemptions in other TAFE or university courses, reducing the time required to complete the second course. For example, a two year diploma may give up to 18 months' credit towards a related three year degree. This saves you 18 months on the time of the degree (and half the HECS debt!).

Will my previous experience or study count?

The TAFE process of Skills Recognition means you may get credit for skills and knowledge you've gained through work, training or life experience. This could shorten your course and lower your costs.

How much will the course cost?

What will it cost to enrol?

You are required to pay a tuition contribution, a student services and amenities fee and an ancillary fee. Material fees may also be required for some courses. Your enrolment is not valid until all of these fees have been paid. See the Fees and Charges Brochure here

Tuition Contribution

The tuition contribution is charged at the rate of $1.37 for each nominal enrolled hour.

  • The maximum tuition contribution that a non-concession student pays for a 12-month enrolment is $877. This is equivalent to 640 enrolled hours.
  • Hours for practical field placement are included in the calculation of contact hours.

Student Services and Amenities Fee (SS&A)

All students are required to pay a compulsory fee that contributes to the cost of providing such services as counselling, special needs support, study support and activities and services provided by the Student Support & Recreation.

The fee is calculated at the rate of 28 cents for each nominal enrolled hour.

  • The maximum SS&A fee that a non-concession student pays for a 12 month enrolment is $179.
  • Off campus students are not required to pay a student services and amenities fee

Ancillary Fee

A fee of $25 per student supports and improve student IT service including enhanced email, home drive backup systems, access to the Flexible Learning Centre and online library, and Learning Centre ITC equipment.

Minimum Fees and Fees Applicable to Concession Students

Students who have one of the following at enrolment time are eligible for the minimum fee:

  • Commonwealth Health Care Card
  • Low-Income Health Care Card
  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Veterans Gold Card

If you and your dependant children are listed on a Health Care Card, or if you have a dependant spouse listed on the Health Care Card, you may also be eligible for the minimum fee.

The minimum fee is also applicable to Indigenous students and students enrolling in 40 hours or less of study.

Minimum fees for a 12 month period are:

  • Tuition fee $55
  • Student services and amenities fee $28
  • Ancillary fee $25

Please note: If you subsequently amend your enrolment or your concession status changes, the minimum fee may no longer apply.

Students enrolled in non-government (fee for service) courses are not eligible for fee concessions or exemptions.

Additional fees may also be charged for materials, excursions and first aid training.

Are there any other charges?

The Employment Centre at Kangan Institute is an established employment services provider which assists Kangan Institute students and jobseekers in general. The Employment Centre is also a comprehensive recruitment service for external companies and organisations. It advertises job vacancies, apprenticeships, and traineeships on a national data base. Jobseekers using the service are considered for these positions, as well as having access to interview coaching and job search assistance including regular workshops on preparing resumes and job applications.

What is Flexible Delivery?

Many Kangan Institute courses are available through flexible delivery. Flexible delivery means that you can choose the time, place and speed at which you study, according to your lifestyle and learning needs.

You may choose to study with a group of students in a classroom with a teacher, or use printed or electronic resources (i.e. online resources) to study in one of our Flexible Learning Centres, or off-campus, perhaps from home or your place of work. You could choose to study on a part-time or full-time basis. You may decide to 'fast track' your course or spread it out over a longer time frame.

To find out whether the course you are interested in is available through flexible delivery, phone the Customer Service Centre on 13 TAFE (13 8233)
