Apprenticeships & Traineeships

Kangan Batman TAFE is one of Victoria's major providers of Australian Apprenticeship and Traineeship training.

What are Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships?

Apprenticeships and traineeships are a combination of paid employment and training for a particular period of time with an employer, as specified in a training contract which must be signed by both the employer and the apprentice/trainee.

The training is done through a registered training organisation (RTO), such as Kangan Batman TAFE and can be done on-the-job (workplace), off-the-job (at TAFE or other RTO), or as a combination of both.

Apprenticeships and traineeships are available in traditional trade areas as well as areas such as finance, IT, office administration or retail, to name just a few examples. For more information, visit the Australian Apprenticeships website.

How long do Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships take?

The length of apprenticeships and traineeships varies according to the qualification and any prior experience and training you may have. Their length can vary from six months full time to six years part time and most can be done on either a full-time or part-time basis. Apprenticeships are generally of three to four years duration, while traineeships usually take one, sometimes two, years to complete.

A training plan is developed to detail what you will study, where and how. Anyone of working age can start an apprenticeship or traineeship. Many apprentices today are adults, including mature aged workers. If you're still at school, have left school or are already employed or looking for work, and you have an employer willing to sign you up, then you may be eligible. You learn skills in a particular industry by paid work plus learning on-the-job, and also through training with a RTO.

How do you get an Australian Apprenticeship or Traineeship?

You need to find an employer willing to offer you an apprenticeship or traineeship in your chosen field. You do this in the same way you would look for any job. Check newspapers and the internet for job advertisements, or contact employers directly and ask if they would be willing to employ you as an apprentice/trainee.

Try contacting employment agencies such as our Employment Centre at Kangan Batman TAFE, and Group Training Australia enterprises. Group Training is an arrangement where a Group Training Company employs Australian Apprentices and hires them out to other businesses, called host employers, while they are undertaking their training.

What are pre-apprenticeships?

Kangan Batman TAFE offers pre-apprenticeships as a starting point for entry into trades. People with little or no experience in a trade area can gain skills and knowledge which will improve their chance of gaining an apprenticeship. Many employers contact Kangan Batman TAFE to source their apprentices so there's a chance of getting an apprenticeship when you finish. Pre-apprenticeships generally take six months and may even reduce the length of an apprenticeship, if you move on to one after finishing the course.

For more information about pre-apprenticeships call Kangan Batman TAFE on 13 TAFE (13 8233).

How do I register with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre?

Once you have secured an apprenticeship or traineeship your employer will need to register you with an Australian Apprenticeships Centre (AAC). Visit the Australian Apprenticeships website for a full list of AACs.
