Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning
The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a hands-on option for people wanting to complete a Senior Secondary School certificate.
It offers:
- practical work-related experience
- literacy and numeracy skills
- the opportunity to build personal, life and work skills
Students who do the VCAL are likely to be interested in:
- undertaking further training at TAFE
- doing an apprenticeship
- getting a job
The VCAL has three levels:
- Foundation
- Intermediate
- Senior
Students can start at the level which best meets their skills and abilities.
Kangan Institute offers a broad range of full-time VCAL programs as well as Flexible VCAL.
VCAL programs
Design
This program teaches students design skills, concept development, 3D design, model building and drawing techniques. Students will also use industry specific software such as Photoshop and Auto-Cad. This program is run at the Essendon campus and delivered at the Intermediate and Senior levels.
Fashion and multimedia experience (FAME)
This program gives students the opportunity to learn all the basic skills required to work in the fashion industry including, design, illustration and garment development, with the bonus of developing additional skills in multimedia. This program provides a pathway into further fashion studies. It is run at the Broadmeadows campus and delivered at the Intermediate and Senior levels.
Give it a go VCAL
This program provides young people with hands-on experience in different trade departments, allowing them to make more informed decisions about what to do next. Students can undertake project-based activities in areas including, furnishing, polishing, engineering, electrical, horticulture and plastics. This program is run at the Broadmeadows campus and is delivered at the Foundation, Intermediate and Senior levels.
Koori VCAL
In this program students can choose from one of the following streams:
- Music
Students will learn basic skills required to work in the music industry including, performance, managing a career in music, and sound engineering and recording. - Indigenous Youth Program
This program is designed specifically for Indigenous males aged 15-19. It offers intensive pre-employment training, supported with tutors, mentors and Koori community Elders. It will include a personal study/employment pathway plan, building and construction, conservation and land management, song recording and video, skill building in literacy/numeracy and IT, self-esteem, attitudinal training and feedback, time management, health issues, anger management, work experience in the private sector, supervised job search, workplace communication/ relationships and cultural and community engagement programs

Automotive
Students complete a pre-apprenticeship, a practical placement in the automotive industry and develop job readiness skills. Entry to this program is via the pre-apprenticeship in Automotive. Prospective students must attend an information session. These are held every Monday at 1pm. This program is run at both the Coburg and Richmond campuses and is delivered at the Intermediate and Senior levels. For further information please call Jenny Molan on 03 9353 1836.
Flexible VCAL
This program provides the opportunity for students to study in a flexible learning environment and learn the basic skills required for a range of industry related areas including business and print and graphic design (desktop publishing). A work experience placement is also built into the course. This program is run at the Craigieburn Flexible Learning Centre.

Triple Trade VCAL
This is a program for students who want a pathway into the furnishing industry. As part of the course, students will complete a Certificate II in Furnishing (Cabinetmaking), Certificate II in Polishing and Certificate II in Machining. They will also work as part of a team to set up a business and make and market furniture, whilst completing their Senior Secondary certificate.

Introduction to TAFE
This is a one year program for young people considering their pathway options. The course will assist young people to develop work readiness and personal development skills whilst exploring the world of work. This course also prepares students for entry into VCE with units in Australian studies, politics, legal issues, science and creative options. This program is run at the Broadmeadows campus.
