What is Work Integrated Learning (WIL)?
Work Integrated Learning is an important component of a student's education and training experience at Kangan Institute. It enables the student to obtain knowledge of the workplace and put into practice skills learned in the classroom. This will play an important role in making students more ready for work.
What are the advantages in a host employer participating?
The host employer will:
- have access, without obligation, to potential trained employees;
- have exposure to immediate part-time or casual employees;
- gain community goodwill for helping students improve their skills and increase their employment opportunities;
- improve productivity in your industry by making training programs more relevant.
What is the Length of the Work Integrated Learning (WIL)?
Guidelines state that up to 240 hours of WIL is permitted automatically as part of a course. More hours are allowed where the national training package/State approved curriculum or a regulatory or professional body support a longer period and evidence of this is available.
How Does Work Integrated Learning Work?
Our WIL Coordinator matches students and host employers by the skillset for learning in the workplace. The coordinator will make contact with the host employer to discuss details of the proposed placement, including:
- Any special requirements before the student starts at the workplace
- The timing of the placement, including starting and finishing times
- Particular safety or clothing items the student must supply.
The host employer may also wish to interview the student before the placement commences to make sure that he/she is appropriate for that particular workplace. The student will work in the host employer for the agreed time to learn skills that may require some assessment.
