Department summary

The Language Studies Department delivers English as a Second Language programs, Auslan and Deaf Studies programs and Adult Literacy and Basic Education programs for adults, generally 17 years and over.

Language Studies also provides training for adults with a mild intellectual disability or special learning needs who wish to improve their education, vocational skills and life skills. Graduates can enter into further study or employment.

Our courses are offered at Kangan Batman TAFE's Broadmeadows, Moreland, Coburg and Richmond campuses, with a choice of day and evening classes.

Our training facilities include an Independent Learning Centre (ILC) and Language Laboratories.

English as a Second Language (ESL) programs

  • Full range of ESL programs ranging from Beginner to Advanced levels
  • Beginner-level courses cater for recently arrived migrants including those eligible for the Adult Migrant English Program (510 hours)
  • The curriculum for ESL courses is Certificate in Spoken and Written English (CSWE) levels I, II, III and IV

Adult Literacy and Basic Education (ALBE) programs

  • ALBE programs are for adult students who have not completed secondary education and plan to return to study. The focus is on reading, writing, oral communication and spelling skills. The curriculum for ALBE courses is the Certificates I ( Introductory), Certificates I, II and III in General Education for Adults (CGEA)
  • Workplace Language and Literacy (WELL) programs for employees of enterprises in the north-west of Melbourne

Programs for adults with a disability

  • Certificate I courses for post-school leavers, including vocational and non-vocational programs
  • Two-year Certificate in Work Education offered at the Broadmeadows campus (including practical experience streams in: food handling, kitchen attending, retail, horticulture and furniture studies)
  • One-year Certificate in Work Education (Automotive) offered at the Coburg campus (including practical experience streams in: spray paint and panel, vehicle dismantling, motor mechanics, auto electrics)
  • One-year Certificate in Transition Education offered at the Broadmeadows campus. This program is aimed at school leavers and includes: travel orientation, immobility, driver education, introduction to First Aid, basic numeracy and literacy and computers for learning
  • Three year part-time non-vocational basic education program including literacy and numeracy

Our staff

  • All Language Studies staff are fully qualified at degree and/or post-graduate level.
  • Staff have extensive experience in teaching in a range of English language and literacy programs, including programs delivered in the workplace for industry and international delivery in Indonesia, China and Korea.
  • Our staff also have extensive experience working with adults with mild disabilities and special learning needs.
