The Auslan & Deaf Studies Centre has been operating since 1988 and is dedicated to providing quality training in the knowledge and skills valued by members of the Australian Deaf community.
Courses offer intensive study in a diverse range of subjects including:
- Auslan - the sign language of the Australian Deaf community
- Deaf Culture
- Deaf History
- Linguistics
- Deaf Theatre
- Introduction to Interpreting
- Deafblindness
- Notetaking for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
The Centre has a core of nine staff including four full-time Auslan teachers, all of whom are Deaf and highly qualified in LOTE training, two hearing teachers who have various qualifications and are nationally accredited Auslan/English Interpreters, a nationally accredited Auslan/English Interpreter and an experienced and Auslan-qualified administrative officer.
Similarly qualified Sessional teachers and interpreters are employed as required.
Mission Statement
The Auslan & Deaf Studies Centre of Kangan Batman TAFE recognises the Auslan policy of the Australian Association of the Deaf and as such, will further develop pro-active courses and resources to empower participants in the areas of Auslan language acquisition, Deaf culture, linguistics and a wide range of issues relating to Deaf people.
