Kangan Batman TAFE delivers high-quality contemporary workplace learning and training to link in with your strategic examples. Here are two examples of how Kangan Batman TAFE is making a difference with our partners in learning.
Manufacturing Industry
Robert Bosch (Australia) Pty. Ltd. is a regional subsidiary of the global Bosch Group, one of the world's largest private industrial corporations. In Australia their core business is the engineering and manufacturing of automotive products. Bosch Australia is also active in the fields of industrial technology and the trading of power tools, hot water systems, household appliances and security systems. Bosch has 1,720 employees across Australia and New Zealand.
In 2005, they approached Kangan Batman TAFE's Industry Training department to customise a training course designed for 50 of their team leaders. Bosch aimed to align the course to their existing internal training, to keep their organisation at the forefront of competitiveness.
The Certificate IV in Competitive Manufacturing, incorporates elements such as Lean Manufacturing, as well as modules from the existing Frontline Management course. The first course started at Bosch's Australian headquarters in suburban Melbourne in November 2005, with six Kangan Batman staff and will be ongoing until 2007.
'Although Kangan Batman TAFE is located on the other side of Melbourne to us, we chose them because we needed an organisation with good prior experience in on-site training at automated manufacturing sites. Kangan Batman TAFE agreed with us on the importance of a long term training relationship, with continual re-enforcement, which was hands-on, practical and delivered by experienced industry trainers.' Jackie Veleska, HR Selection and Development Co-ordinator, Bosch.
As Kangan Batman TAFE was able to work with Bosch to customise the course, it has fitted well into the training vision and practices of the company. The success of this program pioneered by Bosch, will now allow the course to become a platform for training partnerships with other industries.
Community Services Industry
In 2003, Kangan Batman TAFE was approached by RMIT to become part of a training partnership to assist the Victorian Department of Human Services (DHS) with a course for people who work in residential group homes providing training and support for people with disabilities. Kangan Batman TAFE and DHS are working directly in partnership to deliver this program to the North West metropolitan areas.
The DHS Shared Supported Accommodation program aims to provide high-quality, supported housing in the community. Accommodation is usually offered in shared housing with up to five other people with disabilities. Support provided within the accommodation includes: household management, general self-care, personal hygiene, and participation in the local community.
The training partnership produced a customised version of the Certificate IV in Community Services and Disability. Trainees under the program study the course part time at Kangan Batman TAFE's Moreland campus.
'We chose Kangan Batman TAFE because of their good reputation in the local community, and we are very happy with their work. They are responsive to our need to customise generic training to match DHS-specific policies, so we have no need to retrain staff in some of our mandatory training areas such as fire safety or manual handling. Teachers are very flexible in their approach and up-to-date. Having experienced Kangan Batman TAFE's approach, many of our employees decide to enrol in further courses with the TAFE.' Trevor Skerry,Statewide Traineeship Co-ordinator Disability Learning and Development Unit, DHS.
This ongoing training partnership has provided structured training and peer support for 120 frontline disability workers.
