Kangan Batman to Business

Welcome

Bruce Bradfield

This year I was fortunate to be able to attend the American Society of Training and Development conference in Washington DC as part of my professional development. The conference, possibly the largest of its kind in the world, with over 10,000 people attending over five days, was an inspirational event for those in the industry.

The opening address by Richard Teerlink, the former CEO of Harley Davidson, (predictably arriving on a roaring ‘hog') considered how management styles affect an organisation's success. His talk ‘Reinventing the Enterprise” illustrated the methods behind Harley's transformation from a floundering company to one of the most respected brands in the world.

“People are the competitive advantage,” said Teerlink. “Organisations need to have a shared leadership and individual accountability.” That means the role of leaders is to create an operating environment in which employees get the resources they need to work. Employees need a process in which they can work together because they want to, not because they have to.

His closing comments resonated with our current experience at Kangan Batman TAFE and our with many of our customers: “Steer away from agenda-strict meetings and foster open communication; offer competency learning instead of simple skills training; and reward employees with respect and caring – not just money.”

I hope that this edition of KB2B is of interest to you and I welcome your feedback.
