It's Guinness with everything, at the Kangan Batman TAFE restaurant!

11 June 2002

Most Guinness drinkers will have tried a 'cider and black' (cider and Guinness), or a 'black and tan' (Guinness and lager). But how many have tasted an 'oxtail and black' pie or 'caramel and black' icecream?

These delicacies and more will be available at a Guinness theme night at Kangan Batman TAFE's Richards Restaurant on Thursday 20 June.

Sponsored by Guinness and the Celtic Club (Australia's oldest Irish club), this special promotion includes a glass of Guinness on arrival, a three-course meal with a choice of dishes at each course, and tea/coffee to finish, all for just $17.90.

Guinness will be cooked into one of the meal choices at each course. For entree, patrons can choose oxtail and Guinness pie or one of three other entrees. For main course there is a choice of pork rack braised in Guinness, lamb cutlets or vegetarian pasta. For dessert, there is a choice of Guinness ice-cream with caramel shards, chocolate souffle or a seasonal fruit flan. Recipes will also be available on request on the night.

Richards Restaurant is located at Kangan Batman TAFE's Broadmeadows campus and is a training restaurant for the institute's hospitality students, ranging from apprentice chefs to food and beverage service students.

This special dinner has been organised by chef instructor Guy Penna and his group of Certificate II in Commercial Cookery students.

"We try to encourage our cookery students to be creative by having theme nights like this. It makes the students challenge themselves to find ways of using different ingredients, such as Guinness in this case", Mr Penna said. "The other purpose of this event is to raise awareness of Kangan Batman TAFE's Hospitality Department to the local community. Many restaurants in the north-west send their apprentices to the larger training providers such as William Angliss in the city, but we are actually much closer. We can also offer students more personal attention and mentoring because our class sizes are smaller."

Richards Restaurant is fully licensed, and is open for lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday (three courses for $13.90), and dinner from Monday to Thursday (three courses for $16.90). The special Guinness Evening commences at 7.30pm. Bookings can be made on (03) 9279 2361.
