Industry forums will provide information on career choices available to young people

01 October 2002

Many young people aged 13 to 19 are not sure of the career choices and the different options of study and training available to them. Their parents may also need to update their knowledge of today’s employment market.

Mindful of the need to support young people to learn about the choices and opportunities available to them, Kangan Batman TAFE together with North West Work Education Development Group has organised four free industry forums where employers will be on hand to answer some of the hard questions on employability and training options, to which students and their parents want answers.

There will also be a mini expo held at every forum, at which various organisations, including group training companies such as Workplace Connect and Apprenticeship Plus, and educational institutions such as TAFEs and universities will provide information and have representatives on hand to answer questions.

The four forums are as follows:

Forum One: Outdoor Industries: 7 November 2002
Venue: Clock Tower Centre, Moonee Ponds
Time: 6.30pm to 8.00pm

This forum will focus on careers in outdoor industries such as: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, roofing, plastering, bricklaying, landscaping, gardening and more.

Forum Two: Information Technology and Multimedia: 14 November 2002
Venue: Kangan Batman TAFE Broadmeadows Campus (Auditorium)
Time: 6.30pm to 8.00pm

This forum will focus on careers in the information technology and multimedia industries such as: office administration, call centres, information technology, multimedia, graphic design, marketing, printing and more.

Forum Three: Production Technologies: 21 November 2002
Venue: Kangan Batman TAFE Broadmeadows Campus (Polymer Training Centre)
Time: 6.30on to 8.00pm

This forum will focus on careers in the production technology industries including: engineering, plastics, furnishing, fabrication, aviation, automotive, design and more.

Forum Four: Working with People: 10 December 2002
Venue: Brunswick Town Hall – Sydney Road
Time: 6.30pm to 8.00pm

This forum will focus on careers in hospitality, human resources, retail, tourism, fashion, community services, nursing, childcare, beauty, hairdressing and more.

There will be industry experts on hand at all forums. These will include employers, managers, past students and teachers to provide information and speak about what employers are looking for when hiring new apprentices, trainees or employees. These experts will be asked questions about what types of jobs are available in these industries and what different pathways are available to gain these opportunities.

These forums have been organised as part of Kangan Batman TAFE’s commitment to the provision of pathways/career education and transition services to the community. Financial support for the forums has been provided by the Commonwealth Department of Education Science and Training (DEST), the Enterprise and Career Education Foundation (ECEF), and the Hume Whittlesea Local Learning and Employment Network.

Kangan Batman TAFE was named Training Provider of the Year in the State Government 2001 Victorian Training Awards.
