The Moonee Valley Mayor, Eugene Hammer, attended a graduation ceremony held by Kangan Batman TAFE's Business Enterprise Centre (BEC) on Thursday 14 November 2002.
Cr Hammer presented certificates to around 70 graduates of the centre's New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) program.
The New Enterprise Incentive Scheme is funded by the Commonwealth Government to assist eligible jobseekers to start their own business. The scheme includes training in small business planning and management (offered by providers such as the Kangan Batman BEC), and income support for the first year of business.
Over 200 people attended the graduation ceremony, held at the Moonee Valley Racecourse.
The event included opportunities to sample the wares of around 15 fledgling small businesses, which displayed their products or services.
Based at Kangan Batman TAFE's Essendon campus, the Business Enterprise Centre has been delivering the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme for nine years and is part of a consortium of Business Enterprise Centres, which provides the service across Melbourne and Gippsland.
Kangan Batman TAFE is Melbourne's largest provider and assists around 290 new businesses a year.
