Doing 83 look-alike KISS make-ups is a feat in itself, but when you have to do them all within three hours to be able to perform live with the KISS band members, then it becomes a marathon dash.

KISS band members were in town for only a few days. They performed live on 28 February in Melbourne. Adriaenne Williams was the lucky free lance make-up artist who was able to clinch the once-in-a-lifetime deal of doing the make-ups (along with her put together team) of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra members and the Australian Children’s Choir members who performed live along with the band.

60 members from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and 23 members from the Australian Children’s Choir took part in a one-off performance by the KISS band where they have performed live with the help of an orchestra and a choir.

The brief from KISS promoters stated that they needed a team of make-up artists who could do 60 KISS made-ups in three hours.

According to Adriaenne, she was able to gain the contract due to her knowledge and training in one of the newest forms of make-up application referred to as air bush make-up.

“This would have to be one of the biggest jobs ever done for a rock concert. I had to put together a team of ten make-up artists for the mammoth task. It was a very exciting and fulfilling experience.”

“Whilst working on the orchestra, we could hear the children’s choir warming-up and it was a very beautiful sound to work with. We were really proud of them when they were on stage performing, it was very rewarding to see them perform,” said Adriaenne.

Adriaenne has been in the make-up business for close to 20 years. After working for ‘others’ in the business Adriaenne decided she needed to branch out on her own.

A year ago Adriaenne enrolled in Kangan Batman TAFE’s NEIS program to learn the ropes of how to run her own business and to come up with an achievable business plan. She feels that the NEIS program has helped her choose what she wants to do instead of taking on any job available.

“My mentor at Kangan Batman TAFE offered invaluable support beyond the course, he encouraged me to go on, showed faith in my business idea and kept on reassuring me that I should go ahead with my plans. He also helped me get in touch with another recent Kangan Batman TAFE NEIS student and she has helped me tremendously with the designing and writing of flyers and other promotional material for my business.”

“My business partner has also completed the NEIS program and we all work as a team. You can say it is all a joint effort,” says Adriaenne.

The NEIS (New Enterprise Incentive Scheme) is a commonwealth government program to help eligible social security recipients gain self-employment. This program includes training in small business management, a business plan, one year of income support and mentor support. Kangan Batman TAFE’s Business Enterprise Centre services inner Melbourne, western and northwestern suburbs.
