A 2m by 1.5m red heart for Heart Foundation's Heart Day!
01 May 2003
The Student Association of Kangan Batman TAFE (KITSA) has organised the making of a giant Red Heart to coincide with the Heart Foundation’s Dress Red for Heart Day Appeal on Friday 2 May.
The heart will be on display at the front of Kangan Batman TAFE’s Broadmeadows Campus on Friday 2 May to encourage awareness and donation for the great cause. Along with the ‘big red heart’, many students and teachers will be dressed in red.
The Dress Red for Heart Day Appeal is the main fundraiser during the Heart Foundation’s Heart Week that is from April 28 to May 4 2003. The Heart Foundation aims to raise $2.5m to lead the nation’s fight against cardiovascular disease.
On Friday 2 May, along with the ‘big heart’ there are collection boxes set up at all the other five campuses of Kangan Batman TAFE to collect donations for the National Heart Day.
The 2 metre by 1.5 metre heart has 30cm sides, giving it a 3D effect. Students taking a hands-on approach manufactured the heart shape from wire. The wood for the inside was donated by students from Kangan Batman TAFE’s Building and Furnishing Department. Once the heart shape was moulded, it was stuffed with polystyrene, newspaper and cardboard and was then secured with wire and string. The next step was to glue the papier-mache onto the frame. The heart was then given a cushion look and the heart was covered in fabric. The Fashion Studies Department helped out by donating a roll of shiny red satin.
According to Lance Gorfine, member of the Kangan Batman TAFE Student Association (KITSA) the making of the red heart has been a team effort.
“The Dress Red for Heart Day is a major fundraiser for the National Heart Foundation and we at KITSA felt that we needed to raise awareness amongst our large 28,000 student population across our six campuses.”
“What has been tremendous about this project is the enthusiasm shown by students wanting to take part in the making of the heart. he making of the heart has been a team project with the idea coming from the President of the Student Association,” he said.
