Kosky Opens $7M Learning Facilities At Craigieburn
17 July 2003
The Minister for Education and Training, Lynne Kosky, today opened new state of the art learning facilities in Craigieburn.
The Malcom Creek Learning Centre incorporates primary and tertiary education facilities, as well as community services.
Ms Kosky said the Craigieburn Primary School, Kangan Batman TAFE, Hume City Council and developers Delphin Lend Lease had worked together to build a centre for lifelong learning.
“The integration of the school and the TAFE campus with local government has produced a unique single entry point to a wide range of services,” Ms Kosky said.
“I am very impressed with the involvement of so many community and educational organisations in this project.”
The building incorporates primary school administration, the school library and the Kangan Batman flexible learning centre. A third wing incorporates preschool and Maternal and Child Health services. The school’s physical education and music facilities also are attached to the main building.
The Bracks Government contributed $2.9 million to the Craigieburn Primary School and $1.6 million to the Kangan Batman TAFE facilities at the centre. The Commonwealth Government contributed $1.7 million towards the project.
The Australian Scholarships Group invested $1.9 million to build ASG Gardens, adjacent houses that have been converted into “overflow” classrooms and other facilities.
The classrooms are being leased by the Department of Education and Training for 15 years, with an option to renew the lease if needed.
Ms Kosky said the Bracks Government recognised the importance of supporting Victoria’s growing communities with first class educational institutions and was investing heavily in school buildings to ensure students continued to benefit from a world class education.
“Since the Bracks Government came to office in 1999, an additional 4000 teachers and staff have been employed and an extra $3.7 billion invested in education and training,” Ms Kosky said.
“We are delivering on our commitments and building on our record of achievement. “We have come a long way since we inherited an education system falling behind the rest of the nation. We are continuing to undo the damage and build a smarter Victoria.”
