A cabinet-making apprentice from Kangan Batman TAFE’s Broadmeadows campus has been recognised in the Victorian furnishing industry’s top student awards.
Strathmore resident Dean Jamieson, 18, received the Pre-apprenticeship Cabinet-making Award in the 2003 Furnishing Industry Training Awards, which were presented at the Victorian Arts Centre on Tuesday 22 July, 2003.
The awards are conducted annually by the industry training board, Furnishing Training Victoria (FTV). FTV is an independent non-profit organisation that provides expert advice to the furnishing industry, training providers, government and students.
13 awards were presented in areas ranging from interior design to cabinet-making, furniture design and production, furniture polishing, upholstery, leadlighting and stained glass. Dean’s cabinet-making award was sponsored by Melbourne East Group Training (MEGT). His prize was a $100 tool voucher and framed certificate.
In 2002, Dean completed the six-month cabinet-making pre-apprenticeship course for which he has been awarded. He is now working for Makis Joinery in Airport West, where he has been for around 12 months.
He is currently in the third year of his cabinet-making apprenticeship, as his completion of the pre-apprenticeship course gave him credit for the first two years of formal training, meaning he commenced as a third-year apprentice.
Dean says he loves his work, and is fulfilling his dream of following in the footsteps of his grandfather.
“I was always making things as a kid, and I used to help my granddad who was a builder. Once I’m qualified, I’d like to start my own furniture-making business. I really love working with solid timber, so I’ll probably specialise in custom-made furniture.”
