Keeping Australia flying

Editorial for Herald Sun 'Great careers start at TAFE' feature

Anthony Chisholm is currently working as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer at Qantas. Outside Qantas, he is a licensed engineer travelling across Australia carrying out developmental engineering work on anything from helicopters to Lear jets.

Anthony’s career in the aerospace industry started when he decided to do an Associate Diploma in Aerospace Engineering at Kangan Batman TAFE.

“I went into aerospace engineering because I realised that it was the key to a dynamic career in commercial aviation. Competition for employment today is fierce. As a mature-age student I felt that qualifications would certainly be an advantage when applying for a job,” he says.

Anthony has also completed a four-year apprenticeship that started at Ansett Australia and then moved over to Qantas. As part of his apprenticeship he completed his Certificate IV in Engineering through Kangan Batman TAFE.

“When I started looking for an institute to do my associate diploma and my apprenticeship, I wanted to find a professional aerospace institution that offered both theory and practical training. Kangan Batman TAFE I believe has the greatest variety of both. The aviation section at Kangan Batman TAFE is very modern and has the potential to be the best of its type in the Asia-Pacific region. The instructors are also very experienced and are from the aerospace industry,” says Anthony.

Along with his dynamic career at Qantas and the developmental work he carries out in his spare time, he is now completing a Master of Aviation Management degree through the University of Newcastle.
