Senator the Hon. Rod Kemp to present certificates to participants of a local CAT project
01 August 2003
On Tuesday, 5 August 2003, Senator the Hon. Rod Kemp, Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport will present certificates to participants of a CAT (Career and Transition) pilot project run through Kangan Batman TAFE’s North West Pathways service.
Senator Rod Kemp’s visit highlights and reinforces the commitment that Kangan Batman TAFE has made to the needs of 13 to 19 year olds in the north and west of Melbourne.
Senator Rod Kemp will present certificates to the members of the Community Partnerships Committee, which includes representatives from the seven Catholic schools who are participating in the project. The members of the Community Partnerships Committee have been instrumental in providing broader collective viewpoints about the implementation to enhance career and transition services for young people in the community.
The Kangan Batman TAFE’s CAT pilot project is one of 23 CAT pilot projects funded by the Commonwealth Government through the Department of Education, Science and Training to develop innovative ways of providing quality career information to young people.
The Kangan Batman TAFE CAT project, which is in its second year, is run through the Post Compulsory Educational Pathways Department and focuses on seven Catholic secondary schools in the north and west of Melbourne.
The project focuses on supporting students to help them plan their transitions from school to employment. A CAT transition adviser visits each of the seven schools one day per week to help assist young people on an individual basis to explore a range of career options with them and to develop a range of pathways to their gaols.
According to Peter Harrison, the Post Compulsory Education Pathways Department Manager at Kangan Batman TAFE, this pilot project’s success can be attributed to the existing links that Kangan Batman TAFE has with secondary schools and community providers in the north and west of Melbourne.
“This project will not only benefit the seven Catholic schools currently undertaking the project, but will also assist other secondary schools in the region. Our aim is to provide resources such as a Pathway Information Guide and professional development programs for teachers and career counsellors,” says Peter.
“The project has had other tangible benefits for young people such as the four innovative hypothetical forums run last year and three that we are running this year. These evenings are for young people and their parents and provide information directly from industry experts. This project therefore does not only benefit the schools participating in it, but the young people of the whole community,” explains Peter.
