International Day of the World’s Indigenous People

06 August 2003

Saturday 9 August is International Day of the World's Indigenous People.

In acknowledgment of this day, Kangan Batman TAFE will be flying the Aboriginal flag on Friday, 8 August 2003 at its Broadmeadows campus.

About the International Day of the World's Indigenous People

In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World's Indigenous People shall be observed on 9 August every year during the International Decade of the World's Indigenous People. The date marks the day of the meeting in 1982, of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Subcommission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. The goal of the International Decade of the World's Indigenous People is to strengthen international co-operation for solving problems faced by Indigenous People in such areas as human rights, the environment, economic development, education and health.

About the Kangan Batman TAFE Koori Programs Unit

The Koori Programs Unit provides a welcoming and supportive environment for Indigenous Australian students at Kangan Batman TAFE's Broadmeadows campus. The unit currently supports around 500 students from diverse backgrounds, ranging from 14 year olds to people in their 50s.

Kangan Batman TAFE is currently building a state-of-the-art centre in Broadmeadows to house the unit. The $1.348 million Wurundjeri Kurnung Willam Balluk Learning Centre is due for completion by early 2004.

The project has been funded by the State Government through the Office of Training and Tertiary Education (OTTE) and the Federal Government through the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA).

“Our aim is to create Australia’s premier Indigenous community learning centre that assists reconciliation through the delivery of programs and services based on empowerment, recognition and respect,” said Terry Kildea, Manager of the Koori Programs Unit.

Courses offered by the Koori Programs Unit include: the Certificate III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art & Design; Certificate II in Music Industry Skills; Certificate II in Horticulture; the Aboriginal Footballers’ Development Program; Certificate I in Learning Pathways for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People (covers literacy, numeracy, computer skills and Indigenous culture); Certificate I in Sport and Recreation; and the Koori Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Automotive course (the VCAL is an alternative to the VCE).
