Top apprentice award will help Dean carve out a solid career

5 May 2004

As a five-year-old helping out his builder grandfather, Strathmore resident Dean Jamieson got his first taste of working with wood, something that is now his passion.

He continued with woodwork all through secondary college, and then completed a cabinet-making pre-apprenticeship course at Kangan Batman TAFE's Broadmeadows campus before gaining an apprenticeship with Makis Joinery in Airport West.

Dean has won the title of Kangan Batman TAFE Apprentice of the Year due to his outstanding workmanship and dedication to excellence in both his trade and his TAFE training during his apprenticeship.

This is not the first award Dean has won. He received an award at the 2003 Furnitex Expo, Australasia's largest furniture exhibition, and the Pre-apprenticeship Cabinet-making Award in the 2003 Furnishing Industry Training Awards.

As Kangan Batman TAFE's Apprentice of the Year, Dean will now be the institute's nomination for Outstanding Apprentice of the Year in the state-wide Victorian Training Awards, to be announced in August.

After getting some years of experience under his belt, Dean's long-term goal is to have his own business in custom-made solid timber furniture.

Kangan Batman TAFE has 24,000 students across its seven campuses in Broadmeadows, Moreland, Richmond, Craigieburn, Coburg, Avondale Heights and Essendon.

Each year in May, Kangan Batman TAFE conducts two graduation ceremonies at the Moonee Valley Racecourse to accommodate all of its graduates and award-winning students.

The second ceremony, at which Dean will receive his award, will be held on Friday 21 May 2004. D+D Global Group is major sponsor of the ceremony, while the Jobs Plus is supporting sponsor.
