Mature-age student stars in annual TAFE awards
5 May 2004
Riddells Creek resident Sally Jones has won one of Kangan Batman TAFE's highest student awards, the Harold C Richards Student of the Year Award.
This award is presented annually to a student who has overcome hardship to excel in their course. It is named after Harold Richards, the inaugural Council President of Broadmeadows College of TAFE (in which Kangan Batman TAFE has its origins).
Mature-age student Sally is this year's winner, for her outstanding achievements during her Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management.
Sally was a great role model to the younger students in her course. She remained committed to achieving her goals despite having to cope with illness throughout her studies.
Sally graduates from her course with outstanding results and a unique honour on her CV, having won Kangan Batman TAFE's inaugural Young Entrepreneurs Business Plan Competition in late 2003.
Sally's teachers describe her as a quiet achiever who was so admired by her teachers and fellow students that they gave her a standing ovation when she won first prize in the business plan competition.
Kangan Batman TAFE has 24,000 students across its seven campuses in Broadmeadows, Moreland, Richmond, Craigieburn, Coburg, Avondale Heights and Essendon.
Each year in May, Kangan Batman TAFE conducts two graduation ceremonies at the Moonee Valley Racecourse to accommodate all of its graduates and award-winning students.
The first ceremony, at which Sally will receive her award, will be held on Friday 7 May 2004. Hume City Council is major sponsor of the ceremony, while the Broadmeadows Town Centre is supporting sponsor.
