TAFE's top trainee award helps Brett build a bright future

Broadford resident Brett Spargo has been named Kangan Batman TAFE's Trainee of the Year.
Brett completed the Certificate III in General Construction at Kangan Batman TAFE's Broadmeadows campus as part of his carpentry traineeship. However, during the traineeship he began working in a different but related area, making pre-fabricated plaster panels for use in building construction.
This meant he had to work much harder than his classmates in his TAFE training, as he was not getting the same day-to-day carpentry experience in his employment as they were.
Brett's teachers describe him as a very keen and well-liked student who brought much to class discussions. In particular, his classmates were interested in a new product made from plaster produced by his employer, RFC Plaster.
The product is pre-fabricated walls made from a combination of plaster and fibreglass and is made by a company Rapid Wall (on the same premises) using RFC plaster. Brett speaks so glowingly of the product - it enables a house to be built in a day - that his employers are preparing him to move into marketing of the product.
As Kangan Batman TAFE's Trainee of the Year, Brett will now be the institute's nomination for Outstanding Trainee of the Year in the state-wide Victorian Training Awards, to be announced in August.
Kangan Batman TAFE has 24,000 students across its seven campuses in Broadmeadows, Moreland, Richmond, Craigieburn, Coburg, Avondale Heights and Essendon.
Each year in May, Kangan Batman TAFE conducts two graduation ceremonies at the Moonee Valley Racecourse to accommodate all of its graduates and award-winning students.
The second ceremony, at which Brett will receive his award, will be held on Friday 21 May 2004. D+D Global Group is major sponsor of the ceremony, while the Jobs Plus is supporting sponsor.
