Archie Roach headlines at Winberri music festival

16 July 2004

Kangan Batman TAFE's Hospitality, Travel and Tourism department and Koori Program Unit students will have the opportunity to put their training to the test at the Winberri Music Festival on Saturday 7 August.

The name 'Winberri' was suggested by elder Norman Hunter, in recognition of Winberri, an elder whose expertise was music.

The Winberri Music Festival is a joint venture between Kangan Batman TAFE and the Hume City Council as part of the council's 2004 Winter Music Festival and will be held at the Broadmeadows campus at the new Gunung-Willam-Balluk Centre.

According to Karen Burgmann, Travel and Tourism teacher and Function Coordinator, what started out as students volunteering to assist at any of the events council was running, ended up with them securing a grant and running their own event.

"Securing Archie Roach, the renowned Indigenous performer, is huge for us," claims Karen. Archie has won two Aria Awards and a Human Rights Award for an unofficial stolen children's anthem 'Took the Children Away'. It was the first time the award was ever given to a songwriter.

Under the direction of class teachers the students will meet various learning outcomes in the competencies they are studying, emphasising a practical, real life situation, rather than theory.

The Events Management and Travel and Tourism students are responsible for the hands-on tasks, such as promotion, set-up, registration, ushering, and food and beverage service. Under the guidance of chef Darryl Selzer, the hospitality and cookery students will be preparing, cooking and serving a delicious three course Bush Tucker dinner. The Koori Programs Band under the direction of Linc Yow Yeh, will perform during dinner and prior to special guest artist Archie Roach.

"We hope that the event is an enormous success for everyone as it really showcases our students and Institute to the wider community," said Karen.

"We have a limited number of seats available for the dinner at $20 per head. For this you get a three course Bush Tucker dinner and show. The dinner starts at 6.30pm and tickets must be pre-booked and pre-paid. Alternatively, from 8pm a limited number of door sales will be available for Archie Roach at $5 a head."
