Stress less with our free Return to Study seminar
23 August 2005
Returning to study can be a daunting experience for some adult learners.
But some of their fears can be put to rest, with Kangan Batman TAFE’s free ‘Return to Study’ seminar to be held on Monday 5 September.
This event is run as part of Adult Learners’ Week, and will be held at the Auditorium at the Broadmeadows campus from 6.15-7.30pm.
There will be counsellors, representatives from the student association and a Centrelink representative on hand to give advice and answer any questions about the return to study process.
Two of our award-winning former adult students, Cecille Weiss and Stelios Stylianou, have volunteered their time to help inspire and motivate prospective mature age learners.
Cecille, a mother of two from Woodend, returned to work and study after 10 years having being discouraged from entering university by her family, who believed that a ‘woman’s place is in the home’.
She was one of four finalists in the Trainee category of this year’s Victorian Training Awards. Earlier this year, Cecille was recognised for her achievements in the Kangan Batman TAFE Graduation and Awards Ceremony, taking out the Trainee of the Year Award, the Retail Silver Medallion and the Outstanding Achievement Award.
Cecille is now a store manager at one of Australia’s largest jewellery chains, and completed the Certificate IV in Retail Management at Kangan Batman TAFE in 2004.
Lower Templestowe resident Stelios is now working as a sessional teacher at the motor mechanics department of Kangan Batman TAFE, after recently completing a Diploma of Vocational Education and Training at the Essendon campus.
Stelios was a mechanic in his native Greece, and when he came to Australia, he opened up his own automotive repairs business.
He returned to study at Kangan Batman TAFE so that he could pass his skills and passion for the trade onto young people.
Stelios was named a joint winner of the Harold C Richards Student of the Year Award in this year’s Kangan Batman TAFE Graduation and Awards Ceremony, an award that is presented to a student who has overcome hardship to excel in their studies.
During his studies, he had dealt with the serious illnesses of both his wife and business partner, as well as looking after his two children and continuing to run his business.
Jan Hastings, Counselling and Advisory Service Coordinator for Kangan Batman TAFE, can give useful tips on how to study without the stress.
Representatives from KITSA, Kangan Batman TAFE Student Association, will be on hand to speak about the support services they offer.
A Centrelink representative will provide an overview on the many options adults have when returning to study, particularly on the financial aspects.
Bookings are essential for catering purposes.
