Students Claim Inter-Tertiary Football Championship

16 May 2007

Kangan Batman TAFE students won the 2007 Inter-Tertiary Football competition, defeating NMIT 158 to 81 points to take the Perpetual Trophy on Wednesday 9 May.

TAFEs and universities played off in this round-robin annual competition at the Epping Leisure Centre, courtesy of the Tertiary Recreation Entertainment Victoria (TREV).

The winning team, dubbed the Wongas Warriors, was made up entirely of Indigenous students studying at Kangan Batman TAFE. Throughout the day the competition was very competitive in the round-robin format but it was Kangan Batman TAFE and NMIT who were the standouts. The teams played each other twice, win one game each by very small margins before meeting in the Grand Final.

The Wongas Warriors demonstrated natural skills and teamwork that the NMIT students could not match. The Warriors started with a number of unanswered goals and kept up the pace throughout the course of the game. VCAL student John Hayes was a star forward, kicking 14 goals in a match winning performance, he was not alone as the Warriors had winners all over the field.

The second Kangan Batman TAFE student team narrowly missed out on the chance to compete in the finals, losing to NMIT.

Kangan Batman TAFE's Student Association, or KITSA, Coordinator Michael Ball was thrilled with the result.

'We haven't won a inter-tertiary football competition in a few years, and because this was the first year the competition was played indoors, it made the win even more special,' said Michael. 'We hope we have the same result for the inter-tertiary netball competition on Wednesday 23rd May.'
