The Nyx win Band Slam event
19 June 2007
Two hundred people watched last Friday night as local band 'The Nyx' won the inaugural Kangan Batman TAFE Band Slam event.
Held at the Northcote Town Hall, the event hosted 11 bands from the northern suburbs of Melbourne and the competition was judged by music industry experts Jen Jewell Brown, Rob O'Connell and Grant Hansen.
Winning band 'The Nyx' won eight hours of recording time at Audrey Studio. The band made up of Jack Byrnes of West Preston, Eamonn Hollamby of Fairfield, Tom Kimpton of Thornbury, and Marcus Porcaro of Preston formed two years ago while studying VCE music together. Lead singer of the band Jack Byrnes has also made impression on the Australian Idol judges and he is currently in Sydney taking part in the television program.
The People's choice award went to 'The Flowers', while judges made an honourable mention to local bands Staircase and Kybosh.
Band Slam was the organised and coordinated by second year event management students at Kangan Batman TAFE's Broadmeadows campus. Student and event co-ordinator Erin Nicholls said the event had been a huge success.
'Band Slam did challenge us and we were responsible for organising the event, marketing, sponsorship, venue details and bands, but it was all worth the effort. The bands were fantastic and I think everyone had a great time,' Erin said.
Audrey Studios, Music@Melbourne music store, the Albert Van Moorst Memorial Trust and Leader Newspapers sponsored the event.
