Good Guides, a great way to get involved
4 July 2007
Kangan Batman TAFE's Work for the Dole department has recently launched a brand new program called 'Good Guides' that matches job seekers with secondary school students to create a step-by-step guide to mentoring.
The jobseekers will act as mentors to the secondary school students and the program is designed so that both parties benefit from the experience.
The program began on 4 June 2007 and works with students from Melbourne's western suburbs including those from Essendon Keilor College, Braybrook Secondary College, Gilmore Girls College and Spirit West.
Mentors in the program will attend meetings at the secondary schools and training organisations, learn about and get to know the young people, participate in activities with them and undertake learning to gain support and information about the ongoing role as a mentor.
Kangan Batman TAFE teacher Denis Sheehan says mentoring has a positive effect on both the student and the adult mentor.
'Even though one person may be more experienced in the mentor relationship both people can learn something new from each other and reach their individual goals by working together,' Denis said.
Good Guides is currently looking for people who are interested in becoming a mentor with the program. If you are interested please contact Kangan Batman TAFE's Work for the Dole Department on (03) 9094 3020 or email wfd@kangan.edu.au.
