National Architecture Award for the Automotive Centre of Excellence.

The Automotive Centre of Excellence has been recognised yet again for its excellence in design.
Kangan Batman TAFE's Automotive Centre of Excellence building at the Docklands won the category of Sustainable Architecture and the category of Public Architecture at the Annual Victorian Architecture Awards.
Held on July 13 at the Palladium at Crown Casino, the Royal Australian Institute of Architects celebrated the finest buildings in Victoria. The Royal Australian Institute of Architects is the peak body for the architectural profession, representing more than 9000 members across Australia and overseas.
The Automotive Centre of Excellence was praised by the RAIA jury who said 'Any scepticism about such a carbon heavy industry being interested in sustainability is soon dispelled by the obvious commitment displayed by the TAFE to sustainable practices, including a sustainability covenant with the EPA. Kangan Batman TAFE is a model project that effortlessly incorporates sustainability initiatives within the constraints of an inexpensive shed type structure.'
This takes the number of awards won by the Automotive Centre of Excellence to five. The Automotive Centre of Excellence has also been received the Special Commendation for Sustainable Design at the 2005 United Nations World Environment Day Awards, The 2007 Victorian Premier's Sustainability Award for Public Sector Excellence and the 2007 Australian Institute of Building Professional Excellence Award.
Kangan Batman TAFE's Capital Development Manager, John Nicholas, says the ability to design and build such an innovative facility, strong in environmental practices, is a great acknowledgement of Kangan Batman TAFE's commitment to sustainability.
'This is an outstanding result not only for the project architect, Lyons, the engineers and the builders, but also for Kangan Batman TAFE and the Victorian government in general,' Mr Nicholas said.
