Kangan Batman TAFE students team with community groups to help environment

27 August 2007

Kangan Batman TAFE's Certificate II Horticulture students have partnered with Western Water, Deep Creek Landcare Group and Sunbury's Salesian College to plant six hundred trees at the Western Water Treatment site in Romsey.

Braving cold and blustery conditions on August 9, the students worked on the project that is part of a strategic Landcare Plan for the plant, with Stream Frontage Funding of $15,000 being received from Melbourne Water for fencing and planting trees.

Implementation of the plan began in 2006 and includes fencing, revegetation and pest control. The Landcare Plan envisages the successful integration and conservation of the site's significant biodiversity values - rare and endangered fauna species, patches of endangered remnant native vegetation - with profitable cropping and grazing regimes.

Kangan Batman TAFE Horticulture teacher Kerri Mewett said this is just one of the exciting projects and hands on learning experiences her students will have throughout the duration of their study.

'We have a strong commitment to partnerships with community at Kangan Batman TAFE but we also engage our students in as many practical activities as possible,' Kerri said.

Kangan Batman TAFE Horticulture students have been recognised with numerous awards including wins at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show Flemings Design Student Competition and the VET in Schools Design Competition held at the Gardening Australia Expo in Melbourne.
