Kangan Batman TAFE recognised at 2007 VAEAI Wurreker Awards

27 August 2007

Kangan Batman TAFE was awarded in two major categories at the recent Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Incorporated (VAEAI) Wurreker Awards.

Kangan Batman TAFE took out the 2007 Training Provider 'TAFE Institute Award' for its Broadmeadows' based Gunung-Willam-Balluk Learning Centre, and Kangan Batman TAFE teacher Linc Yow Yeh won the 'Teacher/ Trainer Award.'

The VAEAI, in partnership with the State Government's Office of Training and Tertiary Education, held its annual Wurreker Awards at the Aborigines Advancement League on 16 August 2007.

The event was attended by over 200 guests, including the Minister for Regional and Rural Development and Skills and Workforce Participation, Jacinta Allan, MP.

The VAEAI Wurreker Awards are held annually to recognise and celebrate progress achieved under the 'Wurreker strategy'-the Koori community and TAFE in equal partnership. The Wurreker Awards acknowledge and celebrate Koori individuals and organisations that have achieved outstanding results in their chosen areas of knowledge and expertise. They also recognise and celebrate training providers and wider community organisations.

The Institute has been recognized because of its commitment and many achievements in Koori education. Kangan Batman TAFE is the largest provider of Koori programs in the state as well as exceeding the targets set out by government for outcomes for Indigenous students. Kangan Batman TAFE also leads in the application of new technologies for students such as online learning over and flexible delivery of courses. The Institute also provides quality student support services.

Kangan Batman TAFE CEO Ray Griffiths congratulated Linc Yow Yeh and all of the Gunung-Willam-Balluk Learning Centre staff.

'This is the culmination of years of dedication and hard work from all Koori Programs Unit staff at the Gunung-Willam-Balluk Learning Centre. Kangan Batman TAFE's commitment to diversity is built on the foundation of our recognition and respect for the rights, history and living culture of Indigenous Australians,' Mr Griffiths said.
