Melbourne awards Sustainability Victoria and Kangan Batman TAFE for green design and innovation

5 September 2007

Sustainability Victoria and Kangan Batman TAFE were one of 10 inspiring organisations recognised as part of this year's Melbourne Awards, for their collaboration in the development of the new state-of-the-art Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) at Melbourne's Docklands.

The first educational institution to be granted a 5-Star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, the building encompasses innovative ventilation, cooling and heating systems, reducing both energy and water consumption by more than 70 per cent (compared with other buildings of similar size).

Presented by the Lord Mayor John So at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday August 30, the awards showcase the innovation, dedication and passion that defines the city of Melbourne.

Kangan Batman TAFE CEO, Ray Griffiths, said Sustainability Victoria's expertise and contribution of $28,000 made it possible to explore environmental options outside the square.

"The success of this project is testament to Kangan Batman TAFE's commitment and determination, Sustainability Victoria's experience in overcoming the difficult technical and financial issues that arise during such ground-breaking work, and Umow Lai Environment engineers' pursuit of excellence," Mr Griffiths said.

Sustainability Victoria CEO, Geoff Mabbett said the ACE is the epitome of sustainable design, innovation and excellence in collaboration.

"The beauty of the ACE is that not only is it a model of green building design for all Victorian organisations to learn from, it is also a focal point for the Victorian automotive sector in best practice in sustainability," he said.
