Tech-smart males with Muscular Dystrophy graduate with honours
15 October 2007
Being able to superimpose your face onto Borat's mankini-clad body using PhotoShop may not seem that big a deal, but for ten young males with muscular dystrophy, this is one of the many skills they have learnt after almost a year's worth of hard work and study.
On Thursday 8 November 2007, these ten young men will celebrate these achievements and graduate with a Certificate I in IT from Kangan Batman TAFE.
A graduation ceremony will be held at the Muscular Dystrophy Association Offices at 111 Boundary Road, North Melbourne at 7pm.
Aged between 18-30, these young men use an electric wheelchair and are affected by varying degrees of muscular dystrophy. Because of some students' limited mobility, teacher Krissi Kirby had to turn pages and position equipment for the students.
Krissi said 'the [boys] were such a good bunch I loved teaching them. One of the carers said even said that the IT classes were the only times the boys would do something without being asked.'
According to MDA's Executive Director, Boris Struk, 'Since most of our boys have only a high school certificate, being able to give them a meaningful vocational qualification is a first for all of us!
'Kangan Batman TAFE has been instrumental in their support. They paid for the boys' fees and learning material, as well as customising the course to suit our needs.'
Kangan Batman TAFE is currently working with the MDA to deliver a Certificate II in Multimedia in 2008.
MEDIA ARE INVITED TO ATTEND.
