Kangan Batman TAFE student takes out horticulture prize

22 October 2007

Kangan Batman TAFE's tradition of success in horticulture has continued with VET in school's student Tim Wood winning the Merit Award at the Gardening Australia Expo on October 7.

Gardening Australia is one of the country's most popular and trusted lifestyle shows. Their expo attracts tens of thousands of visitors and has large media exposure, making Tim's success at this event more exciting.

People entering the competition received a brief with specific dimensions, plant types and quantities, with which they were required to fill a garden.

Tim won the Merit Award in the VETiScape Landscape Design Competition. His design featured a dry creek bed', bird attracting plants with low water requirements, outdoor furniture, a bird bath and a pond.

Tim said his inspiration and love of native plants came from working with his father and grandmother in the garden as a child.

"Dad and Nan were real gardeners so I got all my knowledge from them," he said.

"Native plants attract birds and don't need much water so they're good for the environment, too."

Tim attends Buckley Park College in Essendon and plans to pursue a career in horticulture.
