ACE wins National Architecture Awards

2 November 2007

Kangan Batman TAFE's Automotive Centre of Excellence has been awarded at the 2007 Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) National Architecture Awards.

The RAIA awards are Australia's most prestigious annual architecture prizes. They were presented to the nation's most inspiring recent architectural projects, and the architects who created them, at a special ceremony on 25 October in Alice Springs.

The Automotive Centre of Excellence was designed by the Melbourne based company Lyons Architects.

Blazing a trail for other educational institutes in Victoria, the Automotive Centre of Excellence is the first educational institution to be granted a 5-Star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. It has reduced energy usage by 71 per cent through its innovative ventilation, cooling and heating systems and uses 70 per cent less water than similar sized buildings due to the inclusion of a rainwater harvesting system.

By utilising design features such as glazing, shading, natural ventilation, natural lighting and the thermal buffer in innovative ways the building and its design is the epitome of sustainable design.

This is the seventh award acknowledging the Automotive Centre of Excellence's environmentally friendly design.

Project Director of the Automotive Centre of Excellence Development John Nicholas acknowledged that Stage One of the centre is an outstanding Building but said there is more to come.

"Being awarded by the Royal Australian Institute of Architecture is a huge honour. We are immensely proud of Stage One of the Automotive Centre of Excellence but we are also eagerly looking forward to the development of Stage Two which will take place over the next couple of years," Mr Nicholas said.
