Walking the Walk for Timor-Leste
More than 50 Kangan Batman TAFE staff, students and their families braved blustery conditions and raised almost $2000 for a fundraising walkathon on Sunday 28 October 2007.
Participants ran, walked or strolled the 5km Westmeadows Reserve, Westmeadows to raise money for the Friends of Aileu's educational programs, and social and physical reconstruction projects.
The Mayor of Hume City Council, Cr Gary Jungwirth, cut the starting ribbon, and even joined in on the walk with his wife, Anne.
While the money from generous sponsors still rolls in, the Kangan Batman TAFE Walkathon expects to raise over $1000.
Cr Mark Higginbotham of the Moreland City Council officially closed the event.
Praising the Kangan Batman TAFE first year events management students for their great work, Cr Higginbotham said every little bit that you can do for our friends in Timor-Leste make a real difference to their future, and no matter how much we raise today, it will all go towards important, long term projects in the country.'
Kangan Batman TAFE CEO, Ray Griffiths, said 'One of the things that makes Kangan Batman TAFE different is the recognition of our local and international community commitment as a strategic aim something well recognised by our local government authorities and something that all staff and students can be proud of.'
The committee would like to thank everyone who participated and sponsored the event.
