Safety Comes First for Tech-savvy Students
21 August 2008
A community partnership between Career Connections - Kangan Batman TAFE, Honda Australia and Red Cross Australia has highlighted the importance of motorcycle safety both on and off the road.
The joint project has seen the development of an educational DVD which is currently being used as part of Red Cross Australia's training programs. The project will officially be launched at Kangan Batman TAFE on Friday August 22, 2008.
Students from Sunbury and Hume Central Secondary Colleges helped to compile and produce the Removing a Helmet from an Injured Motorcycle Rider DVD, with assistance from Career Connections Kangan Batman TAFE, Honda Australia Rider Training and Red Cross Australia.
Frank Hardy, team leader at Career Connections Kangan Batman TAFE, said the DVD is a great example of a community partnership achieving great success.
"Many individuals, businesses and schools have combined efforts to produce this project, and the result is a valuable educational tool which has quickly become a standard part of Red Cross Australia's training program," he said.
"The DVD features footage of off-road riders, to remind us that safety is important off-road, as well as in high traffic areas. There's also a segment on various helmet types and the correct way to remove them, and an accident scene, where a passer-by attempts to remove a helmet from the injured rider. Everyone who has contributed to the project should be proud of their achievements."
The two students involved in the project, Phillip Georgiadis from Sunbury Secondary College, and Zaid Sako from Hume Central School, went through an application process that included addressing key selection criteria.
Phillip and Zaid were involved in all aspects of the project, including initial discussions, suggestions for the storyline, filming and editing.
Zaid and Phillip were both in Year 11 VCE at their respective schools, and undertaking Certificate II in Information Technology Multimedia in VET. They both expressed an interest in pursuing a future career in media.
The official launch will feature a screening of the DVD followed by presentations by key staff and students involved in the making and distribution of the project. The launch will begin at 3pm.
