Raising funds for World Vision
2 June 2009
Kangan Batman TAFE hospitality students are gearing up for a big World Vision fundraising effort this year, kicking off with a chocolate drive.
Hospitality teacher Tracey Zammit said students from the Certificate III in Hospitality (commercial cookery) are hosting the annual World Vision event to raise funds for a sponsored child in India.
"For several years now, Kangan Batman TAFE students have raised funds to support the sponsorship of six-year-old Surendra, who is one of the many underprivileged children living in the poverty-stricken villages of India," she says.
"Through the World Vision sponsorship, the students are hoping to raise money which will go towards his education and health."
Children in Surendra's community face many challenges, with around 70 per cent of the population living below the poverty line.
"This year's hospitality class is made up of many international students who have experienced the poverty and despair first-hand," Tracey says.
"As a group, we chose to support Surendra in the hope that we will not only help improve his life, but the lives of all the members in his community."
The students are hoping to raise money through a commemorative lunch at Kangan Batman TAFE's training facility Richard's Restaurant, a chocolate drive and a sausage sizzle.
The focus of the fundraising effort is the commemorative lunch in Richard's Restaurant at Broadmeadows on June 18, where a delicious three-course meal will be created by hospitality students at just $16.50 per person. All profits made from the event will contribute to the fundraising effort.
Bookings for the commemorative lunch can be made through Sheryl on 9279 2676.
