A Cinderella story
6 May 2010
Melbourne artist Kate Carroll is putting her best foot forward at this year's Toorak Village Sculpture Exhibition with "Cinderella's Soul" - an artwork fit for a princess.
The Kangan Institute visual merchandising teacher is taking part in the exhibition for the first time and says the shoe was inspired by an interest in Venetian glass.
"Cinderella's Soul features imported Venetian glass with 24 carat gold tesserae used inside and in parts of the outside," she says.
"The idea for the design stemmed from the relevance of the shoe to Italy with desire to artistically explore the famous glass of Venice."
Kate's artwork is certainly well travelled, having enjoyed recognition of the highest level in Europe at the bi-annual Orsoni Prize 2009 in Venice late last year.
For the month of May it has been selected to join more than 80 contemporary sculptures as part of the Toorak Village event.
Held each year to celebrate sculpture art and attract visitors to the vibrant township, the event is widely regarded as one of the world's most unique exhibitions, where people have even been known to purchase artworks from their car while stopped at traffic lights.
Kate says taking part in the exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to unite business, community and art outside of the standard gallery environment.
"I studied interior design initially, which led to a strong career direction in retail design and visual merchandising spaning the last 15 years," she says.
"My experience in display, design and creation of a visual concept allows my love of colour and 3D form to be complimented via the glass medium."
Cinderella's Soul is on display until the end of May at A&G Optique, Shop 9, Toorak Place Arcade 521 Toorak Road, Toorak. The beautiful vibrant colours, design technique and enchanting reflection of this Venetian glass piece are a must see.
