Last week Kangan Institute's hospitality students put their best foot forward at the department's inaugural waiters' competition dinner.

The event, which was held over two nights at Kangan Institute's hospitality training facility Richards Restaurant, was held as a prelude to the VICTAFE Challenge. Hospitality teacher Warren Mendoza said the winner of the event will now go on to represent Kangan Institute at the state-wide competition.

"We gave out three prizes on the night, with first prize going to Advanced Diploma of Hospitality student Rebecca Walker," he said.

"Second prize was won by Sarah McDonald and third went to Claire Gaynor. We also awarded honourable mentions to VET in Schools students Fulya Kundakcilla and Tayla Nicholson."

Nearly 100 guests gathered over the two evenings for a sumptuous dinner to support the students as they competed for a range of prizes, medals and a perpetual trophy.

Across Victoria, other TAFE institutes are also holding waiters' competitions and the winners from each TAFE will compete at the state final in October.

Warren said the competitors were supported by a dedicated team of teachers and trainers.

"We've been working with them over the past few weeks to ensure that the judging criteria met the requirements, not only at state level, but also at competition level," he said.

"At the end of our competition, the judges commented on the extremely high standard of the competitors' skills."
