Health links right step for students

Future of fashion in the making

Kangan Institute's massage therapy department continues to create better learning opportunities for its students by linking real-world training to practical studies.

A new partnership with Moontides - a naturopathic health care centre which specialises in women's health - gives students a first-hand view of the industry and their future career paths.

Each month the students take part in an expo conducted by Moontides at the Prahran Market, providing free massages designed specifically for women's health.

Massage coordinator Pauline Kelly said that these 'real life' learning opportunities are becoming increasingly important for TAFE training.

"Our students must have access to a wide range of experiences to help build them into qualified, competent practitioners," she said.

"While there is a strong focus on the practical components of massage therapy in our courses, we need to ensure students have a well-rounded set of skills which will see them thrive in a business environment. The opportunity to participate in these expos, and assist with event preparation, administration and client care can really make such a big difference in skills development and a better understanding of the health care industry."

The most recent expo focussed on fertility and featured information and guest speakers from a range of backgrounds. Along with providing massages to expo attendees, Kangan Institute students also had the opportunity to listen to guest speakers and broaden their knowledge of complementary medicine and how it relates to massage therapy.

Next month's expo will be held on Friday September 3 from 10am and will feature information on bone health with a focus on arthritis and osteoporosis.

'I had never attended TAFE before but I felt really comfortable from the start of my security operations course. The teachers were knowledgeable and helpful, and the information was understandable and relevant.'
