Future of millinery at Centre of Fashion

More than 130 people attended last week's Kangan Institute Centre of Fashion Millinery Soiree - Millinery Minefields - in Richmond.

Fashion was most definitely at the fore as more than 100 pieces of student work went on display.

Centre of Fashion millinery teacher Melissa Jackson said the standard of student work was a clear indication of a great future for millinery design in Melbourne.

The event was attended by many industry leading lights, all gathering to keep their finger on the pulse of the next generation of milliners, and also to listen to guest speaker Diane Masters talk about her experience as one of Australia's original supermodels during the 50s and 60s.

The annual soiree event featured a parade of 21 student works displayed by models dressed in huge swaths of pinned fabric. Melissa said the models' gowns - which were held in place by 3000 dress-makers' pins - were a tribute to Hal Ludlow, widely regarded as Australia's first couturier.

Many students will now go on to display their works at a number of fashion and millinery shows during the spring racing season and fashion calendar.
