Hume City Council employees upskill with on-site ICT training
8 March 2012
Learning can take place anytime and anywhere and Kangan Institute's training partnership with Hume City Council proves just that.
Approximately 800 Hume City Council employees based across Hume City Council municipality have been given the opportunity to upgrade their IT skills on-site at their workplace with Kangan Institute's Information Communications Technology (ICT) department.
This initiative was launched in November last year to help Council employees gain vital skills to work with Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 2010 software after a major Council-wide system upgrade on all personal work computers.
Through the use of industry-based learning projects, the training covers the differences between Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 7 as well as the major differences between Microsoft Office 2003 and Office 2010.
Duy Thai, Information Services Coordinator at Hume City Council, said that the Council has developed a strong working relationship with Kangan Institute as a result of this training initiative.
"The process of organising the training was easy and clear Kangan Institute met with us and put together a proposal for our review. They were able to come up with the training material required by the Council and provided trial training sessions," he said.
"Overall, Kangan Institute representatives were very professional, helpful and were able to accommodate Hume City Council requirements."
Tashara Roberts, Teacher and Industry Based Learning Coordinator at Kangan Institute who facilitated the Hume classes, shared that the training program was developed in consultation with Hume City Council for a customised and highly-relevant approach to learning.
"We worked closely with Hume City Council from the initial drafting of the program through to the evaluation to ensure that every aspect of training met the needs of our participants," she said.
"As part of Kangan Institute's commitment to continuous improvement, we regularly liaise with the key stakeholders throughout the delivery of the program to ensure that any issues are immediately addressed."
Kangan Institute's program includes 'take home' resources and the development of a reference guide for Hume City Council employees. Additional post-training guidance is also extended through email support for appointed 'champions' and the creation of a Frequent Asked Questions (FAQ) page based on queries provided by the Council.
The training of Council employees continues this year.
