Indigenous Student Support

Kangan Institute's Koori Programs Unit provides a welcoming and supportive environment for Indigenous Australian students.

Based at the Broadmeadows campus, the unit currently assists around 500 students from diverse backgrounds, ranging from early school leavers to mature aged students, as well as students in custody around metropolitan Melbourne.

The Koori Programs Unit supports students studying at the Gunung-Willam-Balluk Learning Centre as well as Indigenous students studying in other departments across the TAFE.

Indigenous students receive cultural, social and study support at the Learning Centre including:

  • provision of study space
  • provision of computers
  • mentoring
  • tutoring
  • counselling
  • individual support on an as needs basis

The unit also offers a range of courses specifically designed for Indigenous Australians. Visit the Gunung-Willam-Balluk Learning Centre's website.

The unit has close links to the local Koori community and organisations such as the Enmaraleek Association and the Glenroy Koori Open Door Education (KODE) school.

'It was quite refreshing to be able to use the knowledge gained from the course immediately upon returning to work. My experience at Kangan Institute was extremely enlightening and I would recommend others to study there without hesitation.'
