We are the champions!

13 May 2011

Like the blistering winds that blow across the Scottish headlands, Kangan teams stormed into the grand final resulting in an epic encounter of biblical proportions.

Teams can from afar- Kangan had entered 4 teams- for the annual TREV Indoor Soccer tournament held at Maribyrnong Action Indoor Sports Centre.

The early round robin matches, full of high spirited and engrossing encounters, saw all our four teams' progress to the semi finals, with the eventual Grand Final being fought out by two teams - DTF & Multicultural Stars - from our Sport, Recreation and Natural Therapies Department.

The grand final was a reply of an earlier see-sawing encounter between the two teams which resulted in DTF winning 8 to 7.

If the earlier encounter between the two teams was nail bitting, the grand final was even more awesome. Both teams played with adrenalin pumping through their veins, searching for the upper hand as they went goal for goal, and thrilling the large crowd with their sporting competitiveness. No sooner had one team gone ahead the other fired back to be level, and as the final siren was blown both teams were 6 apiece.

Extra time was called and both teams lifted to greater heights, trading blow for blow while the spectators were gob-smacked at the class of futsal being played, but the deadlock could not be broken with both teams scoring 2 goals.

With near exhaustion and nerves on edge, team members faced a penalty shoot out - who would be the first to crack?

The players lined up for a best of five shots each to determine the winner, but even this scenario resulted in an awe-inspiring and remarkable 4 all draw, and so the teams entered a golden goal penalty shoot out.

Once again the teams traded blow for blow….one all…two all and suddenly it was all over, Multicultural Stars had prevailed, and they were the 2011 TREV Indoor Soccer Champions.

The spectators erupted giving a resounding applause to both teams - what a match - what a tournament - well done to all.

Diary Cover Competition winner for 2010

Student Diary 2011

5 October 2010

Congratulations to Fashion student Helen Poser who has won this year's Student Diary Cover Competition.

Helen, a first year student at Kangan Institute's Centre of Fashion, was inspired to create her design after learning about the competition's theme 'New pathways & directions.'

"I wanted to create something unique. In my head I saw the swirls and butterfly pattern which indicate all the different paths that students can take," she said.

Helen also credits her friend Amy Bullen for the eye-catching photography, which she used to interpret the theme.

"I wanted to show what different people can feel when they think about the future. Some are hopeful and excited about what is out there; at the same time people can feel overwhelmed and scared about where they are heading."

Driven by her creative impulses, Helen hopes one day to work in the fashion industry and gain experience working with alternative fashion and theatrical costume designs.

As winner of the competition, Helen Poser will be receiving a brand new iPad, courtesy of printing company Inspired Design. Congratulations also to second and third runners-up Luke Vella and Nathan Paterakis who will also receive gift vouchers for their efforts.

New facilities at Kangan Institute for students

10 March 2010

Kangan Institute now has several sporting facilities available at Broadmeadows. These areas will enable students to burn off some energy or to relax.

The new sporting facilities at Broadmeadows include two basketball shooting areas (near Building J & C), a soccer goal (near Building H) and a synthetic turf volleyball court (near Building I). A bike storage shed near Building A will also assist those who ride a bike to school.

These projects have been made possible by The Centre for Youth who received funding to create the facilities.

Various projects around the other campuses are still in the works, so students will be updated once they are completed.

Students can access sport equipment for these areas by visiting the Student Recreation office at Broadmeadows, Building K.

There are also new facilities for all students to enjoy at Moreland. The prayer room, originally located in the student cafeteria, has now been moved to Level 1, Building A (across from the bathroom facilities).

The old location of the prayer room in the student cafeteria has now been refurbished as a female shower and locker room. If you would like to use the facilities but find that the door is locked, please enquire at the reception.
