Host organisations
What is a host organisation?
Community organisations who take on work experience participants are referred to as host organisations.
Host organisations give participants the opportunity to work within their organisation to gain valuable work experience. By offering an opportunity for participants to assist in various activities, the host organisation offers the chance for the participant to gain new skills and abilities.
Becoming a host organisation
Kangan Institute has community projects which may have a correlation to you as a host organisation.
You can become a host organisation by taking on a work experience participant for two days per week for around 26 weeks (approximately six months).
Participants are expected to comply with the host organisation's employee regulations.
Depending on the organisation's size, capacity for supervision and the amount of work available, a host organisation may take on more than one work experience participant.
If you are interested in becoming a host organisation call Kangan Institute's work experience coordinator on 9094 3020.
What are your obligations?
As a host organisation you are required to provide:
- Adequate supervision for the job seeker (no more than five participants for every supervisor)
- Provide meaningful tasks for the participant to further develop employment opportunities and skills
- Email or fax the Kangan Institute work experience supervisor with an attendance sheet at the end of each week.
What is expected from the participant
Participants are required to:
- Attend six to 15 hours per week for a 26-week period
- Must advise the host organisation when they will be absent
- Comply with the employee regulations of the host organisation.
Insurance cover
Marsh Pty Ltd insurance brokers arrange insurance policies to cover work experience participants on behalf of the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) who fund the program.
Occupational health and safety and risk assessment
All host organisations will be asked about their occupational health and safety policies and will need to participate in a risk assessment before participants begin their placement.
This is a DEEWR requirement.
