Training Credits

The following information is for job seekers who are required to participate in, or who wish to volunteer for, the Work for the Dole program.

What are Training Credits?

Work for the Dole participants who complete a certain number of hours in the Work for the Dole Program are eligible for Training Credits of up to $800.

What can Training Credits be used for?

Training credits can be used to pay for accredited courses or training, delivered by a Registered Training Organisation and or for requisite materials and equipment.

How do I get a Training Credit?

You can obtain a Training Credit by participating in a Work for the Dole activity.

Value of Training Credits

Your Training Credit is based on the hours of work experience you do during your six month placement. If you do 390 hours of work experience, you will earn an $800 Training Credit after six months.

The maximum Training Credit you can receive during each six months of Work for the Dole or Community Work is $800.

In some cases you may be eligible for early access to your training credits. You can talk to the Training Credit Officer at Kangan Batman TAFE if you have any questions.

How can I use my Training Credit?

Your Training Credit can be used for a wide range of competency-based and accredited courses. You can do a course which costs more than the value of your Training Credit, but you must pay the difference. You can also do more than one course using your Training Credit.

In some cases, you may be able to use part of your Training Credit to pay for books and equipment which are essential for your course, but you cannot use them to pay for a module or unit of training you have already begun, or to pay a Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) debt.

What kind of courses can I do?

There are many competency-based courses relating to industries to choose from. Examples of these include: hospitality and tourism, mining, automotive, retail, health, business and administration.

Training Credits can also be used for other accredited courses, such as computing packages, marketing, public relations, bookkeeping, metal fabrication, occupational health and safety, aged care and many more, such as driving lessons (but not the driving test).

Check with your Community Work Coordinator to see what you can use your credits for if you are unsure.
