Course overview

Under the OHS Act 2004 (section 67) all elected health and safety representatives (HSRs) and deputy HSRs are entitled to undertake WorkSafe Victoria approved OHS training for HSRs and choose their training provider in consultation with their employer.

This five day WorkSafe approved training course delivered by Kangan Institute will help a HSR understand and exercise their powers effectively. This training equips HSRs with the confidence, skills and knowledge to represent their co-workers (i.e. DWG) and to help make their workplace safer. Although the primary audience is HSRs, managers, supervisors, health and safety committee members and anyone with an interest in health and safety may also benefit from attending this course.

Pre-requisite & eligibility requirements
This course is designed for new Health and Safety Representatives (HSR),their deputy’s, managers and supervisors.

Learning outcomes

This five day training program, approved by WorkSafe Victoria provides HSRs and their deputies with:

* an understanding of the objectives of the OHS Act 2004 and their role under the Act;
* knowledge of their powers under the OHS legislation and how to exercise these powers;
* skills in representing members of their designated work group including consulting, issue resolution and negotiating with their employer;
* knowledge of where and how to obtain assistance in dealing with hazards and dangerous situations; and
* an understanding of the role of occupational health and safety in the workplace in the prevention of incidents, injury and illness.

Duration

This is a five day course, normally conducted over five weeks.

Pre-requisite & eligibility requirements

This course is designed for new Health and Safety Representatives (HSR), their deputies, managers and supervisors.

Participant requirements

Course cost includes material, WorkSafe publications and catering.

Additional information

Under the OHS Act 2004, Health and Safety Representatives are entitled to training. Upon request, employers must allow HSRs and their deputies to attend an initial course in OHS after their election and refresher training at least annually. Requests for training must provide 14 days of notice.

Delivery of the OHS courses for HSRs is subject to future approval by WorkSafe of Kangan Institute as an approved provider of OHS training for HSRs and/or the enactment of the Work Health and Safety Bill.

What you receive at the completion of the course?

Students will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
