Course overview
VicRoads requires the completion of this course prior to applying to become a Licensed Vehicle Tester able to carry out the physical inspection of a vehicle or trailer over 4.5 tonnes GVM. or a person employed by a Licensed Vehicle Tester able to carry out the physical inspection of a vehicle or trailer over 4.5 tonnes GVM. The course is also a pre-requisite for persons requiring accreditation as a LB (Bus) category examiner.
Learning outcomes:
Be able to complete all documentation and access information as required to test and examine a Heavy Vehicle (a vehicle or trailer over 4.5 tonnes GVM.)
At successful completion of this course an examining mechanic can apply to become an “authorised signatory” for the Licensed Vehicle Tester if approved by VicRoads.
VicRoads requires the completion of this course prior to applying to become a Licensed Vehicle Tester able to carry out the physical inspection of a vehicle or trailer over 4.5 tonnes GVM.
Pre-requisite & eligibility requirements
- Must be a qualified motor mechanic to VicRoads requirements.
- Must hold a current Australian Heavy Vehicle Driver’s Licence.
- Must pass a National Police check if employed by a New Licensed Vehicle Tester(from Jan 2011).
- Be able to read/write paperwork and carry out assessments in English language as required to complete a test and inspection of a Heavy Vehicle.
Who needs to do the Accreditation Course?
- Companies wishing to apply to VicRoads for licensing as a LVT of Heavy Vehicles. Proprietor and examining mechanics must complete course.
- Companies expanding from LV (Light Vehicle) category LVT to HV (Heavy Vehicle) LVT.
- LVTs and vehicle examiners requiring re-accreditation, (notices sent by VicRoads)
- Other persons notified by VicRoads to complete the accreditation course.
(E.g. changes of directors, mechanics, etc).
Participant requirements
Note: Examining mechanics must produce:
- Certified photocopies, or the originals of recognised trade qualifications
- A current HV drivers licence must be presented before a HV examiners accreditation card can be issued
- Two passport size photos are also required.
Appropriate PPE to Institute requirements to be worn. (Requirements with the HV departments course confirmation fax.)
Note:- Vicroads require examining mechanics employed by a new LVT from 2011 to undertake National Police name search check and submit a portfolio of experience to VicRoads before being considered as an examiner for a LVT.
Additional information
The accreditation course conducted at Kangan Institute is of 4-day duration (36 hrs).
The first day of the course covers the Administration requirements of an LVT. The second and third day cover the HV Examiner requirements.
Proprietors or directors of companies who do not actually inspect the vehicles are required to successfully complete the first day of the course only (8hrs).
Motor mechanics that examine the vehicles are required to successfully complete the whole 4 days (36hrs).
Currently accredited LVT light vehicle examiners expanding to heavy vehicle are required to complete the second and third day of the course (16hrs.) if they have completed the LV or MC course after July 2010. Note if you are going to apply to become a tester you must complete the administration within 6 months of applying to VicRoads to become a new tester.
