There will be extra costs for reference books of approximately $500. A detailed booklist will be made available when you enrol in this course.

What employment opportunities will I have?

This course may lead to work in a variety of accounting-related functions including the areas of tax, auditing, financial management, corporate financial accounting, and management/cost accounting.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain skills in accounting procedures to undertake duties requiring the services of a professional accountant. The course is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of those already in assistant accounting positions, giving an overview of the role of an accountant in public practice, and in both large and small business operations.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Advanced Diploma of Accounting. This program is nationally recognised as part of the Australian Qualifications Framework.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Kangan Institute students who graduate with an Advanced Diploma of Accounting are able to take advantage of the pathways arrangements with Victoria University, LaTrobe University, and the University of Ballarat.

A completed Advanced Diploma of Accounting will provide you with significant credits towards your studies in Accounting (or other business-related disciplines) in a Bachelors Degree, reducing the required duration of your studies at university.

Can I apply?

The entry requirement for this course is the completion of the Diploma of Accounting. The entry requirement can be met by evidence of equivalent competency to the above through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

How will I be selected for this course?

All applicants will need to attend an interview and enrolment session, bringing with them evidence of their citizenship (or residency) status and (if under 20 years of age at 1 January, 2012) proof of age in order to enrol in the course.

How long is the course?

The course would normally be completed in six months (full-time) or one year (part-time), but may be completed in a shorter time depending on the nature and extent of your previous formal studies, work and life experience.

Where and how can I study?

This course will operate from the Broadmeadows campus and can be undertaken in a traditional, face-to-face learning mode. As an alternative to attending formal classes you may wish to study more flexibly, attending some classes/workshops, or perhaps study entirely from home (in a distance learning mode).

Classes are available during weekdays and evenings, and students may enrol as either part-time or full-time.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information upon commencement of your classes.

Skills Recognition is available for all units in this qualification. If you require any additional information on Skills Recognition (crediting your previous learning or life experience) please contact the Department Administrator on 9279 2470.

This course has two key intakes (beginning and mid-year), but students may enrol at other times (subject to restrictions imposed by course census dates).

Students may commence their Accounting studies in the Certificate III in Accounts Administration or in the Certificate IV in Accounting (or Bookkeeping) and then continue those studies in the Diploma of Accounting.

To enrol in the Advanced Diploma of Accounting it is not strictly necessary to have completed the Diploma of Accounting. However, the Diploma of Accounting must be completed In order for the Advanced Diploma of Accounting to be awarded.

The units you will study are: Monitor corporate governance activities, Apply economic principles to work in the financial services industry, Interpret and use financial statistics and tools, Prepare complex tax returns, Audit and report on financial systems and records, Implement tax plans and evaluate tax compliance, Evaluate organisation's financial performance, and Prepare and analyse management accounting information.
