Course overview
This course is designed for those who are aspiring to acquire knowledge and skills to meet the ever-changing demands of the IT industry. People gaining this qualification are able to design and validate/evaluate computer and computer networking equipment and systems, manage risk, estimate and manage projects and provide technical advice/sales. This course is made up of 19 units of which 16 are core units.

What employment opportunities will I have?
This course may lead to employment in areas such as a System Support Officer, Software Engineer, Network Engineer, Network Analyst, Computer Systems Engineering Associate, ICT Help Desk, Computer Technician and performing hardware installation and configuration.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills in local and wide area networks, develop internet and intranet services, maintain security and firewall protection, frame relay and ISDN, develop and maintain cabled and wireless networks and services. You will also gain a solid understanding of data communications and digital principles, installing and managing Command Line and GUI based operating system software for computer and networking equipment, configure networking equipment, switches and routers, FTP, Web and Email communication, and work within single-user, multi-user, networked operating systems, programming.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems Engineering. As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Kangan Institute students who graduate with an Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems Engineering are able to take advantage of the 'pathways' arrangement with LaTrobe, Swinburne, Ballarat and Victoria Universities. Students can receive advanced standing (credit) in the form of both priority entry and course credit points towards a bachelor qualification. Each university study unit carries a credit point value.
As of 03/2010, students who have graduated with the Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems Engineering can utilise advanced standing pathways in the following bachelor degrees:
- Bachelor of Computer Science [125 credit points]
- Bachelor of Information Systems [125 credit points]
Can I apply?
You may apply if you have satisfactorily completed VCE or an approved equivalent course and the satisfactory completion of the work requirements (eligibility to transfer); or are mature age and have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course. (Mature age is anyone over the age of 18 who has been out of full-time education for more than 12 months.)

How do I apply?
If you wish to apply for this course, you must obtain an application form from the Institute.
How will I be selected for this course?
Year 12 students applying through VTAC will be selected using their ATAR scores.
All other students will have to complete a basic literacy and numeracy test. You will also be interviewed.
How long is the course?
This is a full-time, 2 year course of approximately 20 hours per week. This is a 3.5 year course part-time.
Where and how can I study?
You will study at the Broadmeadows campus.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with this information.
